Castrol GTX engine oils

Find out how Castrol GTX with with our advanced 3X Clean formula keeps engines cleaner for longer*.

Helps extend engine life

Older or higher mileage vehicles are more susceptible to engine sludge which can restrict the flow of oil and prevent it from properly protecting the engine.

Castrol GTX tackles this problem head-on so you are ready for the road ahead.

Castrol GTX's 3X Clean formula provides superior protection against engine sludge. Keeping engines cleaner for longer – 35% cleaner than industry standards**.

The danger of engine sludge

As a vehicle's mileage increases, the engine can become susceptible to sludge. Sludge is a thick tar-like substance that if left untreated, can lead to poor running, loss of power, and even engine seizure.

There are three main causes of engine sludge:

  • Extreme heat can break down oil, which forms sludge when combined with dirt particles.
  • Water, unburned fuel and other contaminants can all react with oil to create sludge.
  • Contaminants that create engine sludge are more easily absorbed by the oil during short trips.

Explore the three key areas below:

Catch

Catches harmful sludge particles in your engine by surrounding and trapping them.

Control

Controls sludge by containing it, preventing particles from sticking to surfaces or combining together.

Clean

Cleans your engine at the next oil change, where sludge is removed with the old oil.

Frequently asked questions

Yes! Whilst mineral based oils can be used in modern cars, we'd recommend using a synthetic or fully synthetic oil as these lubricants offer greater performance and protection in the demanding conditions found in modern engines. Use the Castrol Product Finder to selec the right oil for your car.
Like all Castrol products, Castrol GTX is extensively tested and benchmarked against industry standards and competitor oils as well as strict industry and manufacturer specifications. Castrol have over 125 years of experience in creating and blending lubricants, with a long and successful association with the world of motorsport where our oils are tested to the limit. You can be sure that when you purchase Castrol, you're buying a quality product.

In general, the higher the synthetic content of an oil, the greater the level of performance, protection and fuel efficiency it offers.

Mineral oils are naturally derived from crude oil that is refined to remove impurities. Part-synthetic oils are a blend of mineral and synthetic oils, offering a balance between cost and performance.

Full synthetic engine oils undergo complex and sophisticated chemical engineering for greater purity.

Full synthetic oils are the most advanced lubricants available offering the best level of protection and various performance benefits when compared to mineral and semi-synthetic lubricants.

Driving conditions such as congested heavy traffic, poor fuel quality, harsh driving conditions, and exceeding oil change intervals can all cause the build-up of a thick, tar like substance called sludge.

Sludge can block an engine's vital oilways - narrow channels that run through the block or main body of your engine. Think of it like cholesterol blocking the supply of blood in veins and arteries. If left untreated, it can rob an engine of its power and ultimately its life.
