High performance cylinder oil for use with all compliant fuels
Castrol Cyltech 40SX is a marine diesel engine cylinder lubricant developed with a bespoke detergency system for operations at higher temperatures and pressures in modern engines,which operate on fuels with sulphur content of between 0.0-1.5%*, and LNG.
* Refer to OEM guidelines.
** Based on no harms vessel trials carried out by bp on B30 and B50 biofuel blends

Headquartered in Athens, Greece – and in business for over 50 years – Sea Pioneer Shipping operates a fleet of bulkers and tankers that provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation services. In partnership with Sea Pioneer, Castrol has provided technical guidance and lubricant solutions for their fleet for more than a decade.
To prepare for compliance with IMO 2020 regulations – which limit the level of sulphur in a ship’s fuel oil to a maximum of 0.5% – Sea Pioneer leadership called for a review of fleet operations, including its tanker, Tenacity. Sea Pioneer Shipping needed to ensure that any changes would protect their vessels’ engines, meet compliance with IMO 2020 regulations, and deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective service to their clients.
The Castrol Technical Services team applied their deep understanding of Tenacity’s operating goals, OEM guidance and potential engine risks with a fuel transition, and recommended a switch to Castrol Cyltech 40SX.
To facilitate this transition, the Castrol Technical Services team conducted a series of closely monitored tests to assess Tenacity’s main engine cylinder lubrication using Scavenge Drain Analysis (SDA) while the vessel’s crew conducted regular Scavenge Port Inspections (SPI).
The collaborative partnership between Sea Pioneer leadership and the Castrol Technical Services team helped ensure Tenacity’s transition to the appropriate lubricant at an optimized feed rate, which in turn helped reduce operational risks. Throughout 2020, Tenacity continued to meet its client needs and no abnormal engine part failures relating to lubricant usage were reported. In October 2020, another round of SPI and SDA sampling tests showed that Castrol Cyltech 40SX had helped protect Tenacity’s MAN Mark 9 engine.
