A Practical Guide to Washing and Waxing your Vehicle

Keeping your car looking its best isn't just about appearances; it's about preserving its value and extending its life. And there’s no better time to wash and wax your vehicle than in late winter, when the combination of cold weather and salt or dirt from roads can damage your car’s exterior. Here's a few of our favourite tips.

Wash and wax

Washing your car – a step-by-step guide

When was the last time you gave your car a handwash? It will thank you for it!

1. Pre-rinse. Begin by spraying down your entire car (or splash with buckets of water) to wash off the loose dirt. For stubborn spots like bugs or bird droppings, apply a soapy rag to soften them.

2. Wash from top to bottom. Wash your car with warm soapy water from the top down. It helps to do this in sections, but remember to rinse each section after washing to help avoid leaving soap residue.

3. Scrub wheels separately. Apply soapy water to the wheel wells and tyres with a brush. Try to avoid getting soapy water on the brake pads.

4. Dry thoroughly. Use a chamois or towel, moving in long strokes that follow the car’s contours until the paintwork is dry.

Waxing your car – why and how?

Waxing not only enhances your car's appearance but also protects the paint from oxidation and rust. It’s best to begin soon after your car has dried after its wash. Here’s how:

1. Apply wax in the shade, preferably when the temperature is above 12C (55F).

2. Work in small sections, using a soft rag in circular motions.

3. Allow the wax to dry to a haze.

4. Polish off with a clean, dry cloth.

General tips for waxing and washing

- Choose a cool, shady spot to avoid direct sunlight.

- Ensure your engine is cool.

- Use an approved detergent to protect your car's finish.

- Gather all necessary supplies beforehand, so they’re ready to use when you need them.

- Don’t wash or wax in very cold weather to prevent water from freezing onto the car.

Regular easy maintenance like washing and waxing can make a world of difference in keeping your car in its best condition. Winter months can be harsh on vehicles, so these steps ensure your vehicle not only looks great but also stays protected against the elements.
