IT'S MORE THAN JUST OIL. IT'S LIQUID ENGINEERING.
High Mileage motor oils have become very common being marketed in the US for some years. In most cases the market has defined a high mileage engine as one having more than 75,000 miles. Such oils can offer advanced performance over both synthetic and conventional non high mileage products focusing specifically on conditions that an aging engine can experience. A High Mileage oil contains base oils and additives designed to take care of aging engines while also being completely suitable for newer engines.
While choosing a High Mileage product is a personal choice using such an oil can be worth it by offering enhanced protection. These products can deliver improved oil burn- off performance which can provide additional protection in an engine where oil consumption has increased over time. High Mileage oils will also help to control wear and tear in older engines and will protect ageing seals keeping them in top shape to help prevent the engine from leaks.
Both synthetic and high mileage oils will do a good job and in making a choice always ensure you are following the manufacturers recommendation for oil grade and performance specification. A full synthetic oil in general will typically be higher in performance than a part synthetic or conventional High Mileage oil. Full synthetics generally will offer excellent oil burn off protection, higher levels of heat resistance and thermal stability, enhanced deposit control protection and excellent anti-wear performance. The best of both worlds would be to select a full synthetic high mileage oil to carry the performance advantages of both a full synthetic and the added features of a high mileage formulation.
While High Mileage oils do have additional performance features, as with any motor oil, one should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for proper oil grade, performance specification and oil drain interval. Oil drain intervals can be found in owner’s manuals or by using the oil life monitor found on the dash of many of today’s vehicles
Castrol offers the choice of two High Mileage motor oils, Castrol GTX High Mileage and Castrol EDGE High Mileage.
Castrol EDGE High Mileage begins with the high-level performance of GTX High Mileage and then adds the benefits of full synthetic technology delivering higher levels of thermal stability, deposit control and excellent anti-wear performance. In addition, Castrol EDGE High Mileage, in the 0W-20, 5W-20 and 5W-30 grade, is approved by General Motors for dexos® 1 Gen 2 applications.
