SLOW-SPEED ENGINE

Castrol’s range of oils for slow-speed engines, including Castrol Cyltech 40SX, helps to remove deposits and corrosion to keep your engine running optimally.

SLOW-SPEED ENGINES

Engines face real lubrication challenges due to varying fuel sulphur levels, feed rate optimization requirements and operational conditions. Castrol’s range of two-stroke marine engine lubricants provides optimal protection against corrosive and mechanical cylinder wear.

SOLUTIONS DESIGNED FOR TWO-STROKE ENGINES

You don’t want combustion acids corroding your cylinder liners and deposits building up on engine parts such as piston crowns, lands and back of rings. Therefore, you don’t want to risk using a cylinder oil without sufficient cleaning capability.

Castrol offers you high-performance cylinder oils that help you meet compliance rules, while giving you confidence it will help protect your most vulnerable asset – your slow-speed engine. The Castrol Cyltech Range provides the right formulation of BN and detergency to meet any fuel or engine operation needs. Each of the three options enables simplified vessel operations between ECA and 3.5% sulphur fuel – and are available in over 800 ports around the world.

PROTECT YOUR ENGINE FROM DEPOSITS WITH CYLTECH 40SX

Castrol Cyltech 40SX is a high-performance cylinder oil for use with all compliant fuels. It’s not your average 40 BN cylinder oil. The lubricant features a bespoke detergency system (BDS) formulated to help provide optimal protection against deposits and cylinder wear.

Small bore engines typically experience severe running conditions, so Castrol Cyltech 40SX is designed to clean deposits from ring-lands and grooves. This enables free movement of rings to maximize your combustion output.

  • Features a bespoke detergency system to promote engine cleanliness
  • Achieves excellent performance at optimized feed rates
  • 2M+ hrs on VLSFO
  • Documented as having reduced deposits when compared to MG products
  • Formulated with a bespoke detergency system (BDS) providing optimal protection against deposits and cylinder wear
  • Protects cylinders in highly fuel-efficient engines with higher pressures and higher temperature
  • A proven track record with 25 years of cleaning cylinders and over 2 million operating hours with VLSFO
  • Potential to deliver 12-50% operating costs savings through optimised performance and risk mitigation*
*Your unique savings opportunity may vary subject to your operating conditions including engine model, operating hours, and number of cylinders.

COMBINE THE RIGHT PRODUCT WITH AN ACTIVE MONITORING PROGRAMME

No two vessels are the same, which means you can’t afford to make assumptions about BN levels across all cylinder lubricants. Castrol Technical Services can help ensure you are using the appropriate lubricant, along with the right feed rate, and monitoring approach to maximize long-term performance. We’ve got an unbeatable depth of engineering knowledge and skills to work with you on a one-to-one basis. Our SmartGains methodology is designed to maximize the operation and productivity of your asset, prevent unnecessary costs and delays, and optimize the ordering process. And with LabCheck it’s easy for you to get the right data at the right time, identify every potential saving, and minimize unplanned downtime.

A SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION TO A COMPLIANT CYLINDER OIL

Headquartered in Athens, Greece – and in business for over 50 years – Sea Pioneer Shipping operates a fleet of bulkers and tankers that provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation services. In partnership with Sea Pioneer, Castrol has provided technical guidance and lubricant solutions for their fleet for more than a decade.

To prepare for compliance with IMO 2020 regulations – which limit the level of sulphur in a ship’s fuel oil to a maximum of 0.5% – Sea Pioneer leadership called for a review of fleet operations, including its tanker, Tenacity. Sea Pioneer Shipping needed to ensure that any changes would protect their vessels’ engines, meet compliance with IMO 2020 regulations, and deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective service to their clients.

The Castrol Technical Services team applied their deep understanding of Tenacity’s operating goals, OEM guidance and potential engine risks with a fuel transition, and recommended a switch to Castrol Cyltech 40SX.

To facilitate this transition, the Castrol Technical Services team conducted a series of closely monitored tests to assess Tenacity’s main engine cylinder lubrication using Scavenge Drain Analysis (SDA) while the vessel’s crew conducted regular Scavenge Port Inspections (SPI).

WE THANK CASTROL TECHNICAL SERVICE LOCAL OFFICE IN GREECE FOR GUIDING AND SUPPORTING US DURING THIS OPERATIONAL CHANGE AND FOR THE OVERALL EXCELLENT COOPERATION WE HAVE THROUGH THE YEARS.Kallergis Leon,Technical Manager.

CLEANER CYLINDERS, RELIABLE OPERATIONS

The collaborative partnership between Sea Pioneer leadership and the Castrol Technical Services team helped ensure Tenacity’s transition to the appropriate lubricant at an optimized feed rate, which in turn helped reduce operational risks. Throughout 2020, Tenacity continued to meet its client needs and no abnormal engine part failures relating to lubricant usage were reported. In October 2020, another round of SPI and SDA sampling tests showed that Castrol Cyltech 40SX had helped protect Tenacity’s MAN Mark 9 engine.

  • No failures in engine parts relating to lubricant usage
  • Clean piston rings and crowns, with no polishing or scuffing
  • No unplanned maintenance or abnormal failures
