In November 2014, it was announced that Castrol would be joined in its partnership of the BLOODHOUND Land Speed Record Project by Jaguar. Together the two companies want to contribute to beating the current World Land Speed Record. Castrol and Jaguar Land Rover have worked together closely for 26 years, in areas such as pioneering technology and advanced lubricant supply. This partnership will become more intense as they work on the BLOODHOUND Project together.
“The two companies share many common objectives”, said Mark Hodgson, European OEM Sales Director, Castrol. The cooperation with Jaguar Land Rover enables the two companies to offer pioneering technological innovations that will benefit dealers and the consumer network alike. Together, Castrol EDGE Professional lubricants will be jointly designed, developed and tested on prototype Jaguar Land Rover engines and transmissions. The objectives of this joint approach are enhanced fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions and improved engine performance.
“We are absolutely delighted to announce Jaguar as a new technology partner,” said BLOODHOUND SSC Project Director Richard Noble. “Jaguar is very strong on innovation and with its huge drive in advanced technology, education and motorsport track record, we have the perfect partner. Together we have developed outstanding inter-team synergy and this is a very special relationship. We are proud to carry the Jaguar branding on the BLOODHOUND SSC. This partnership will help us to shift the limits of what’s possible even further.” “Castrol is responsible for the entire lubricant side of the project and the Titanium products introduce superior technology,” Noble went on to say. The incredible pressure and high temperatures that build up in the SSC during the record-breaking attempt require the strongest and most advanced Castrol engine oil for the Jaguar V8 engine: Castrol EDGE with TITANIUM FST™. It sets new standards in the development of engine oil and ensures maximum performance when putting limits to the test. This makes it an excellent choice for the BLOODHOUND Project, which is constantly pushing the limits of what is possible thanks to new, outstanding technologies.

It’s not without reason that the BLOODHOUND SSC is often described as a combination of a race car and an aeroplane. A Jaguar V8 engine with about 550 hp pumps around 40 litres of hydrogen peroxide per second into the rocket that will propel the BLOODHOUND SSC with the incredible power of 135,000 hp at up to 1,700 km/h (1,056 mph) – which equals the power output of about 230 Formula One engines. Nothing is left to chance in the BLOODHOUND SSC. In addition to Castrol EDGE with TITANIUM FST™, other high-quality Castrol lubricants are being used in the BLOODHOUND Project. Castrol 5000/BP Turbo Oil 2380 is used for the jet engine of the BLOODHOUND SSC, Castrol Hyspin AWH-M46 for the hydraulics, Castrol React SRF for the braking system, Castrol Alphasyn T32 for the wheel bearings and Castrol Inertox Medium 150 is used to grease the HTP rocket.
The BLOODHOUND Project has scheduled its first of two record-breaking attempts for autumn 2015. A 20 kilometre by 1.1 kilometre section of the desert in the Hakskeen Pan in northern South Africa is currently undergoing intense preparations. If the BLOODHOUND SSC breaks the current record of 763.035 mph (1227.986 km/h), the next world record attempt will take place in 2016, with the aim of exceeding 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 km/h).
