The electrification of commercial vehicles continues to accelerate. For owners and fleet operators, zero tailpipe exhaust emissions can help them meet their own sustainability targets, and make them more attractive to partners and customers. Combined with lower noise pollution, these vehicles are also able to make deliveries to places that traditional vehicles can't go, as well as the ability to operate out of hours, and for more hours of the day.

Governments worldwide are setting ambitious targets to curb carbon emissions from heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), acknowledging their significant environmental impact. All major markets have been driven by legislation which will lead to the ramp-up of significant numbers of zero-emission vehicles in the near to medium term. The European Union aims for a 90% CO2 emissions reduction by 2040 through stringent CO2 standards for HDVs. Additionally, zero emissions zones for freight are being implemented in major cities worldwide. The bp Energy Outlook 2024 forecasts that by 2040 between 30-50% of new medium and heavy duty truck sales, depending on use case, will be zero emissions trucks, powered by either an electric traction battery or hydrogen.
