Reduced weekly requirement of cleaning the grease line

With Castrol's Molub Alloy 6040/460-1.5 grease the steel mill reduced the weekly cleaning requirement of the grease line. Read the complete case study.

  • Molub-Alloy 6040/460-1.5 grease
  • Lubrication Grease
  • Dump Bell Glands (Stove Gland Seal)
  • Eliminated grease blockages in bearings

The challenge

  • A conventional grease was being used in a major integrated steel mill.
  • This grease would harden and stiffen inside the grease lines, causing starvation to bearings and gland seals lubrication.
  • This also caused the gland seals to wear prematurely and require replacement (parts & labour) every three months at $5,000 annually.

The solution

  •  Castrol Engineers reviewed the problem with site engineers and determined that the current grease was breaking down, separating to block the grease lines due to high ambient temperatures on top of the Blast Furnace.
  • Castrol recommended using Molub-Alloy 6040/460-1.5, which is shear stable when held at a pressure in long lubrication lines in high ambient temperatures.

The business benefits

  •  Since the implementation of Molub-Alloy 6040/460-1.5 grease, there have been no grease blockages ensuring the bearings and the glands of the hot blast furnace valves are receiving fresh grease.
  • Regular weekly cleaning of the grease line was required earlier to keep grease flowing to the bearings. Molub Alloy 6040/460-1.5 eliminated this extra effort as well

Castrol Molub-Alloy 6040/460-1.5 grease advantages

  • Formation of a protective layer
  •  Compression of the protective layer
  • Micro-smoothing. MFT-PD particles migrate into the metal
