Castrol Basics

What systems does a passenger car consist of?

In all, there are 5 types of lubricants used in a typical passenger car:

  1. Engine oils
  2. Transmission Oils
  3. Brake Fluids
  4. Coolants/antifreezes
  5. Greases
What is the main job of an engine lubricant?

Reduces friction by keeping the moving parts of the engine from rubbing together, serving to smooth the movements of engine parts.

The 5 basic functions of a lubricant
What does a lubricant contain?

A lubricant contains a base oil and viscosity modifiers and is mineral- or synthetic-based.

Mineral-based oils are sourced from refined crude oil, whilst synthetic oils are derived from modifying the structure of the hydrocarbons. Mineral oils are ideal for older vehicles needing higher viscosity, while newer, higher-performance engines require lower viscosity and specialised additives. Each has its benefits depending on the age of your car and specific engine requirements, noting that choosing the right oil for your engine can extend its life and enhance its performance.

Mineral

  • Conventional Oils
  • Refined to remove impurities

Synthetic

  • Synthesized to alternate chemical structure
  • Achieve better performance specifications than mineral oils
  • Superior low and high-temperature performance
  • Far better oxidation performance, thermal stability & cleanliness
  • Superior protection against the formation of sludge & deposits
What is Viscosity?
A fluid’s resistance to flow - the thickness or thiness of a fluid governed by temperature. Key things to remember.
  • Evolution in engine technology has made the challenges for lubricants more extreme.
  • The demand for increased power from smaller engines has led to higher engine pressure.
  • Loads in the valvetrain are the highest in the engine, exerting the most stress on the engine oil.
  • Turbochargers run at up to 200 000 RPM generating temperatures up to 800 °C.
  • The only thing preventing metal-to-metal contact is a thin layer of oil.
Who sets specification levels?
Specifications are set by Industry, legislative bodies and OEMs.

Castrol GTX 15W-40

Application

Castrol GTX 15W-40 is suitable for use in automotive gasoline engines where the manufacturer recommends an API SL or earlier specification 15W-40 lubricant.

Advantages

Castrol GTX 15W-40 provides:

  • Superior protection against engine sludge*
  • Advanced protection against viscosity and thermal breakdown.
  • Premium quality base oils and anti wear additives to help extend the life of your engine.
  • Helps minimize oil consumption

Castrol GTX Diesel 15W-40

Application

Castrol GTX Diesel 15W-40 is suitable for use in automotive gasoline or diesel engines including inter-cooled and turbo-charged diesel engines where the manufacturer recommends an API CI-4/SL or earlier specification 15W-40 lubricant.

Advantages

The demands of diesel engines can cause your oil to get thick resulting in loss of engine efficiency and poor lubrication.

A careful balance of performance additives help prevent your oil from thickening and keeps it flowing freely.

The high loads and stresses in today’s diesel engines can cause wear in critical engine parts such as camshaft and cylinder bores.

Castrol GTX Diesel provides outstanding diesel engine wear protection.

Castrol MAGNATEC 10W-40 A/B

Application

Castrol MAGNATEC 10W-40 A/B is suitable for use in Automotive gasoline and diesel engines where the manufacturer recommends an API SP, ACEA A3/B4 or earlier

specification 10W-40 lubricant.

Castrol MAGNATEC 10W-40 A/B is also approved for use in VW group vehicles that require a VW 501 01 / 505 00 specification 10W-40 lubricant and Mercedes vehicles that require an MB-Approval 226.5/229.3 10W-40 lubricant.

Advantages

Castrol MAGNATEC’s Intelligent Molecules:

  • Cling to critical engine parts when the oil drains down
  • Cling to your engine forming an extra layer that protects during start up and beyond;
  • Bond to metal surfaces to make engine parts more resistant to wear;
  • Are combined with synthetic technology to provide increased protection

CRB Multi 15W-40 CH-4

Advantages

During its working life, your heavy duty engine faces challenges from combustion by-products that can form deposits, and thicken the oil.

Castrol CRB Multi 15W-40 CH-4 helps combat these issues in two ways:

  1. It contains cleaning agents which help to displace particles that may otherwise build up on your engine surfaces, reducing deposits.
  2. It also contains anti-oxidants which help to disrupt the chemical reactions that can lead to oil thickening.

Castrol CRB Multi 15W-40 CH-4 is suitable for use in high speed 4-stroke diesel engines that use a broad range of fuel qualities.

Vecton 15W-40 CK-4/E9

Application

Castrol VECTON with System Pro Technology™ delivers up to 45% extra performance reserve* for longer useful oil life. Castrol VECTON will give your heavy duty engine maximum drain intervals.

Modern trucks use new technologies to make as much as 30% higher torque, but that also brings higher engine temperatures and pressures. is punishes the oil, pushing it closer to breakdown, reducing its useful life. Castrol VECTON’s System Pro Technology™ formulated with extra performance reserve fights oil breakdown by:

  1. Controlling oxidation and deposits
  2. Neutralizing harmful acids
  3. Maintaining viscosity.

System Pro Technology™ also adapts to increased temperatures resisting viscosity loss through thermal and mechanical shear. All of this means longer useful oil life giving you the confidence in your maximum drain interval.

*Compared to API and ACEA industry requirements and based on tests conducted on 81% of the Castrol VECTON range by volume using 12 months sales up to March 2017.
