CASTROL CHOSEN BY NASA TO KEEP MARS PERSEVERANCE ROVER OPERATIONAL

Castrol Braycote is playing a critical role in NASA’s mission to Mars, providing lubrication to instrument and robot mechanisms on its “Perseverance” rover.

On 18 February 2021, after a seven-month journey from Cape Canaveral Air Force Base, Florida, NASA’s Mars 2020 “Perseverance” rover successfully landed at Jezero Crater on the Red Planet. It has travelled a huge distance, yet its journey is just beginning. 

 

The rover is scheduled to work for at least one Mars year (about 687 Earth days), searching for signs of ancient microbial life, characterizing the planet’s geology and climate, collecting carefully selected and documented rock and sediment samples for possible return to Earth, and paving the way for human exploration beyond the Moon.

“Perseverance” rover is the largest, heaviest and most sophisticated rover NASA has ever sent to Mars. It is equipped with precision instruments and will operate in Mars’ extreme environment. To keep all those hi-tech parts running smoothly in outer space, Castrol has once again been chosen by NASA. 

 

When it’s a mission to Mars, you don’t get a second chance. Any technical failures can mean mission aborted. NASA is using Castrol Braycote greases and Brayco oils to provide lubrication to the scientific instruments on its “Perseverance” rover.

Castrol Braycote greases and Brayco oils can provide excellent lubrication for scientific mechanisms. Besides operating in extreme temperatures, they have been formulated to have minimal “outgassing” in order for mechanisms to work at optimum levels, even at extreme temperatures as well as in high vacuum conditions. 

 

Castrol Braycote and Brayco lubricants have lubricated mechanisms on NASA space projects since the 1960s.
