BATTERY THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Over the last decade, there have been huge advancements in EV battery technologies, allowing the delivery of more power, and reducing range anxiety with greater distances per single charge.


One of the key challenges EV battery systems continue to face is regulating temperature under increasingly extreme operating conditions such as ultra-fast charging and in all types of climate.  Currently, most electric cars have either air cooled or indirect liquid cooled battery systems.


Air cooled systems are a popular choice, especially amongst early generation EVs; but while this method is relatively simple and cheap, air cooling is less efficient, and can perform poorly in extreme conditions and climates which can limit the vehicles’ range.  

 

Indirectly cooled battery systems rely on fluids that have a higher level of heat conductivity than air but are still limited when it comes to extreme operations such as sustained ultra-fast charging and hard driving.


Next generation battery electric vehicles are moving to direct cooling in order to enable ultra-fast charging at sustained rates and improved battery system and vehicle performance.  This requires a new generation of e-thermal fluids to meet these increasingly demanding requirements

  • Has lower viscosity levels than conventional dielectric fluids, such as transformer fluids.
  • Has strong electrical insulation, and a high flash point to protect your battery against breakdown and ignition.
