NATURAL GAS ENGINE SHINES AFTER 11,000 HOURS ON CASTROL DURATEC NG

PRODUCT NEWS / Post date:

Castrol Duratec NG performance shines even after 11,000 hours in a real-world natural gas engine refuse application – proving once again that Duratec NG can safely extend drain intervals while keeping the engine clean.

Not all oils are appropriate in a NGEO application. Natural gas combustion burns hotter and cleaner than typical fuels, which creates the need for enhanced oxidation and nitration control. The illustration shows the relationship between nitration and oxidation with combustion temperatures of various fuel types.

Castrol Duratec NG is specifically formulated with high quality, hydrocracked base stocks and an enhanced additive package that lowers engine wear. Recently, a natural gas Cummins ISL G320 engine was inspected after operating 11,000 hours on Castrol Duratec NG while performing 600-hour oil drain intervals. Unit performance exceeded the customer’s expectations, as it was found to have low amounts of deposits and overall wear – despite the extra stresses put on the engine due to the stop-and-go conditions typical of a waste collection application.

The inspection report concluded that all pistons looked good with little carbon depositing on the piston tops and top grooves. There was no visible wear on the exhaust, intake cams or rockers and used oil analysis results indicated that the engine and oil performed below condemning limits. Furthermore, there was virtually no sludge within the top and bottom half of the engine; in fact, the sludge score was 9.72 on a merit scale where 10.0 equates to clean. The included images are parts of the engine taken at the point of inspection.

The engine inspection was conducted by a Cummins dealer as part of a pre-arranged test for Castrol and our customer that owns and operates the unit. The engine was brand new and only operated on Castrol Duratec NG throughout the duration of the test with drain intervals extended out to 600 hours – leveraging the Castrol Labcheck used oil analysis program.

Over thousands of hours of in-field engine tests, Castrol Duratec NG continues to prove that it surpasses all key criteria for natural gas engine lubricant performance including oxidation and nitration control, acid neutralization and valve protection.

The excellent wear protection and exceptional oxidation and nitration control by Castrol Duratec NG will help to extend the engine life of your fleet, which can provide savings to your bottom line.

Castrol Duratec NG meets the CES20074 specification.
