With the summer months approaching, maintenance professionals should be aware of potential problems with bulk oil systems brought on by thermal pressure. Because lubricants expand when the temperature increases, elevated pressure in suction and delivery hoses, piping, and/or components can be the result.
If the pressure rises to exceed a component’s pressure-handling capabilities, then a rupture in the system can occur. Ruptures often result in costly cleanups and can damage surrounding environments.
To prevent thermal pressure build-up, ensure that all bulk systems and their components are shaded from direct sunlight and are in well-ventilated areas. Also, mobile application units such as service/lube trucks, trailers, and skids should be parked out of direct sunlight, especially over extended periods of time.
Thermal relief kits that relieve elevated pressure can be added to bulk dispensing systems at a fraction of the cost of a clean-up. A thermal relief kit is highly recommended in applications that include diaphragm pumps and/or inventory control components (pulse meters, fluid solenoids, etc.), as these components often are the first to fail as pressure elevates.
The Castrol® Equipment Dept. can supply thermal relief kits that are simple to install in most existing bulk oil systems.
