Maintaining heavy duty equipment requires a focus on lubrication products, their quality, and their proper application. Many equipment managers spend a great deal of time researching what they feel are the best products to keep their equipment in the field and out of the shop.
Castrol is proud to provide industry-leading lubrication products. To ensure product integrity, it is important to Castrol to assist our customers in maintaining the highest possible quality and cleanliness while our products are stored in bulk oil dispensing systems.
Following delivery, one of the key factors in maintaining oil quality is to keep products clean and moisture-free. As oil is added to and dispensed from a storage tank, air is also transferred to and from the tank’s interior. Additionally, thermal pressure can cause air pressure to rapidly change within a bulk oil tank on a daily basis. Particulate matter and moisture can and will follow along as air pressure equalizes within the tank.
If you are not already taking precautions to prevent particulate matter and moisture from entering your bulk oil tanks, you should strongly consider this often overlooked detail. Fortunately, simple, cost-effective steps can be taken to prevent contaminated air from entering your bulk oil tanks while also filtering out contamination that may already exist.
The Castrol Equipment Department recommends using a simple air breather filter system that takes only minutes to install. Des-Case Corp. provides numerous sizes and options of air breather filters that can be installed directly to any unused bung on top of a bulk oil tank.
Des-Case breather filters have particulate filters and moisture attracting beads housed in a clear casing to draw in and retain moisture. When a filter is installed, the entire rubber plug ring from the bottom of the filter housing should be removed. When a filter is new, all of the beads are purple in color. After approximately three months, the beads will be turning pink, which is a sign that the filter should be replaced.
If you already have a Des-Case breather filter installed on a bulk oil tank and the beads are pink, it’s time to replace the filter. The change in color is due to moisture being retained within the beads, which means the lubricant inside your tank is not being negatively impacted.
With the lower manifold of the Des-Case breather filter having an open exposure to the interior of the tank, the beads and filter will also trap particulates and moisture that already exist inside the tank.
Because of the importance of lubricant quality and cleanliness, all new tank packages ordered through the Castrol® Equipment Dept. come with a Des-case breather filter already installed.
