COLD-WEATHER TIPS: MAINTAIN OPTIMUM LUBRICANT PUMPABILITY

EQUIPMENT NEWS / Post date: 7 January 2016

During the cold winter months, oil and grease products become more difficult to pump. Here are several tips that may help with this issue:

If your oil products are located outdoors in the open, you should consider building a blind around them to block the wind. Using heat lamps will help if your oil products are located in any room that is not heated. For drum and keg grease products, heat blankets can be purchased from industrial supply distributors such as Grainger (www.grainger.com).

Be sure to inspect the air lines that supply air to your lubricant products. If moisture is present, the lines can freeze, which will cut off the air supply. Also, oil and grease pumps are both designed to supply their full output at 100 psi; increasing the air pressure in cold weather will not increase flow and can shorten the life of a pump.
