And whether it be in Formula 1®, rallying, endurance or motorcycle racing, the partners we support with Castrol products compete at the leading edge of the most fiercely-contested championships on Earth, which means that we can challenge our oils in the most high-pressure environments.


When our founder Charles ‘Cheers’ Wakefield first became involved in racing in 1906, it was inspired by his fascination for the automobile and the aeroplane, and his passion to drive performance and endurance to new heights. His team developed a lubricant using a measure of castor oil, that was fluid enough to work in a cold engine but sufficiently viscous to withstand extreme heat and friction.


They called it Castrol.


A century on, and that passion to engineer solutions for those who endeavour to reach further remains at the core of everything we do.

Motorsport has always been the beating heart upon which Castrol thrives, but we do not merely supply racing teams, rather we stand alongside our partners in a mutual quest for higher performance.


We work in synchronicity with teams and engineers so that Castrol products are considered as crucial as any other key component on any vehicle competing on track.

Unlocking exhilarating performance

While motorsport is in our very DNA, so is sponsorship. Indeed, in the 1920s and '30s as Wakefield’s products spread further across the world and the sport, he pioneered the use of logo stickers on the side of vehicles.


Today Castrol chooses partners who share the same principles of endeavour and desire to push the limits of what can be achieved.


And we work closely with teams that want to uncover new technologies and develop understanding as much as we do. That’s why we stand alongside Renault F1 Team in its quest to win the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. It’s what inspired us to develop a bespoke formulation of Castrol EDGE SUPERCAR for the Ford GT endurance programme and it is what drives us to compete with the M-Sport Ford team in the toughest stages of the FIA World Rally Championship.
