PATH360 CARBON NEUTRAL PRODUCTS

In 2014, Castrol became the first company in the world to offer a certified carbon neutral lubricant, Castrol PROFESSIONAL, in accordance with PAS2060.  Ever since, Castrol has continued to expand its carbon neutral offer across cars, commercial vehicles, and wind turbines.

CARBON NEUTRAL IN ACCORDANCE WITH PAS 2060

For a product to be considered carbon neutral, its cradle to grave greenhouse gas emissions must be quantified and neutralized through a combination of emissions reduction activities and carbon offsets.  Castrol’s carbon neutral products follow a robust process where external independent third parties are used to measure the cradle-to-grave emissions using the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and assure as certified carbon neutral in accordance with the PAS 2060 specification.

The figure below comes from the GHG Protocol’s Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard and it demonstrates the key activities that make up a product’s life cycle. To quantify the GHG emissions of the product, primary and secondary data is collected for each activity and used in conjunction with emissions factors (coefficients) to convert activity data into GHG emissions.

CASTROL’S CARBON NEUTRAL DECLARATION

In accordance with PAS 2060, Castrol’s carbon neutral declaration for 2021 will be I3P-1, a commitment to certified carbon neutral.  Castrol will measure the carbon emissions of the products in scope and offset these emissions using high quality offsetting programmes developed by bp Target Neutral (bpTN).  See bp Target Neutral for more details.  In parallel, Castrol will be implementing its carbon management plan which includes reduction activities across the entire value chain.

In 2022, Castrol will repeat this process in order to demonstrate an improvement in carbon emissions and an achievement of certified carbon neutral, I3P-3.  Because these declarations can change on an annual basis, the disclaimer: *in accordance with PAS 2060, see www.castrol.com/cneutral for more information is used wherever PATH360 carbon neutral is mentioned.

HISTORICAL CARBON NEUTRAL PRODUCTS

Castrol’s Carbon Neutral offer within the PATH360 strategy includes the products that had maintained certified carbon neutrality from 2014 – 2020.  However, during the period of transition between the historical programme and PATH360, some of the carbon neutral certifications have expired.  To maintain carbon neutrality continuity while these products are reintroduced in the new programme, Castrol has estimated and offset emissions to cover the transition period.

CARBON NEUTRAL DOCUMENTATION

Castrol’s Qualifying Explanatory Statements (QES’s) demonstrate how carbon neutral status is achieved under PAS 2060.  For the 2021 portfolio of products, the QES is expected to be available from July 2021 and will be published here when the independent third-party assurance is complete.  For historical examples, click here:

Carbon is used as shorthand for aggregated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reported as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e).  Carbon dioxide equivalent is the universal unit of measurement used to indicate the global warming potential of greenhouse gases expressed in the terms of the 100-year global warming potential of one metric tonne of carbon dioxideConfidential .
