Unique challenges faced by hybrids

For those who enjoy the thrill of driving, performance hybrids can deliver improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing power.

Engine oils must work harder to deal with the unique challenges of hybrid operation:

Contaminants
Engine intermittency
System efficiency

These conditions can disrupt some oils which risks power output and compromises performance.

Contaminants

Switching between an electric motor and an internal combustion engine (ICE) causes hybrid engines to run cooler, which can lead to water and fuel build-up in the oil. This can disrupt some oils and cause engine deterioration.

Engine intermittency

Hybrids repeatedly switch between the electric motor and ICE. The engine can operate at low speeds and can ramp up to high engine speeds quickly. Some oils can’t keep up, reducing engine performance and protection.

System efficiency

The ICE in a hybrid powertrain recharges the battery that powers the electric motor. Cooler running and lower oil temperature can lead to reduced engine efficiency and in turn, poorer fuel efficiency and charging of the battery.

Introducing HYSPEC

There is currently no dedicated industry standard specification for hybrid engine oils. So we developed HYSPEC, Castrol's credible and rigorous hybrid performance standard to benchmark our oils against.
