Panasonic Jaguar Racing Formula E Team

Putting E-Fluids to the test

  • Panasonic Jaguar Racing and Castrol collaborate to put electric vehicles to the test on the track in the sixth Formula E season
  • This partnership will help deliver breakthroughs for the electric vehicles of tomorrow; pre-season performance benefits are already evident
  • Partnering Panasonic Jaguar Racing fits Castrol’s aim to help drive the transition to electric vehicles

Tomorrow’s breakthroughs

With the Formula E season about to start, the Panasonic Jaguar Racing Formula E Team has been working closely with Castrol’s engineers to put e-fluids to the test on the track, to help find breakthroughs for the electric vehicles of tomorrow.

Castrol advanced e-fluid products are supplied to the Panasonic Jaguar Racing Formula E Team for use in the Jaguar I-TYPE 4 and these are already showing pre-season performance benefits. Partnering together in the demanding race environment of Formula E is the perfect way to jointly develop, monitor and test the e-fluids for both race cars and the road cars of the future.

From race track to factory

Jaguar and Castrol’s on-track relationship builds on a long and successful partnership in motorsport dating back to the 1980s and includes prestigious wins such as Le Mans 24 hours in 1988 and 24 Hours of Daytona in 1990.

This partnership was expanded to road cars in 2001 when Jaguar Land Rover chose Castrol to be its preferred global strategic partner for lubricants technology, factory fill and aftermarket.  This close partnership continues today, on and off the track, delivering technology that unlocks fuel savings, reduces CO2 emissions, as well as developing e-fluids for electric vehicles.

Phil Charles, Panasonic Jaguar Racing Technical Manager, said of the new partnership: “Castrol’s range of e-fluids, greases and lubricants have become a significant part in all of the performance exploration avenues of Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Formula E program.”

“Powertrain efficiency is the key differentiator in Formula E. We constantly strive to improve the performance of our electrical machinery and to reduce friction losses in our mechanical installations. Our technical partnership with Castrol has allowed us to make advances throughout the electric vehicle powertrain thanks to Castrol’s development of bespoke EV transmission fluids which offer fantastic wear and damage protection” concludes Charles.

Transitioning to electric vehicles

As drivers look to transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and as EVs continue to evolve, Jaguar and Castrol’s engineers are pioneering new testing and monitoring methods, to help drive efficiency and economy.

“Using Castrol’s e-fluids and e-grease products will allow us to collaborate, learn and win on the track, and further develop advanced technology for the award-winning Jaguar I-PACE and future road-going Jaguar vehicles. Formula E is a great real-world test bed for future products,” said James Barclay, Panasonic Jaguar Racing Team Director.

Mandhir Singh, Chief Executive Officer for Castrol adds: “Castrol is delighted to partner with Jaguar for the sixth Formula E season.”

“Castrol is delivering advanced lubricants that, through improved engine efficiency and fuel efficiency, can reduce emissions today and it has the technology to develop breakthroughs to encourage the transition to electric vehicles and, ultimately, help to decarbonise the transport of tomorrow.  This partnership will play a key part in advancing us towards this goal. Good luck to the team!”
