When an engine generating a 135,000 horse power (HP) accelerates a car to almost 1,700km/h (1,056mph), the forces at play would tear any normal vehicle to shreds. However, the BLOODHOUND Supersonic Car (SSC) is anything but normal. The BLOODHOUND resembles a gigantic rocket on four wheels and is expected to break the existing land speed record of 1,228km/h (763mph), which was set in 1997, in South Africa in summer 2015, before raising the bar even further one year later. The goal is for the BLOODHOUND SSC to break the 1,000mph barrier: that is an incredible 1,609km/h.

“Castrol is basically responsible for all the lubricants side of the Project,” says BLOODHOUND SSC Project Director Richard Noble who also oversaw the successful 1997 and before that the 1983 record attempt, when he was also the driver. “A land speed record car like ours has to have the highest power to weight ratio possible. We’ve got to make the car as light as we can, yet also maintain its strength. The record attempt will be made on a specially prepared 20 kilometre long and 1.1 kilometre wide stretch of desert on the Hakskeen Pan, in the Northern Cape of South Africa near the borders with both Botswana and Namibia.
