Rick Kelly and Castrol Racing are powering into the future with the reveal of Kelly Racing’s new #15 Castrol-backed Ford Mustang Supercar. After committing to running the Ford Mustang in the 2020 Supercars Championship season, the team had sixteen weeks to execute a brand-new car build and complete its own in-house Ford engine program.
It was no easy task with hundreds of components designed and manufactured in-house just for the engine, while the car build itself was a big team effort between all of Kelly Racing’s departments including the engineering, fabrication shop, machine shop, paint and composites, engine department and the main assembly workshop.
Kelly Racing has involved the fans throughout the entire build of the Castrol Mustang via the team’s Road to Mustang video series, providing unprecedented access and technical insight into how the team has built this brand-new Mustang in just sixteen short weeks.
Continuing this, the car was revealed today at Federation Square in Melbourne in front of hundreds of the team’s supporters at a public display where fans were able to meet with Rick Kelly and see the hard work the team has put in to complete this project.
Without the support of technical partners including Ford, ACL Bearings, AutoDesk, Snap-On, BP Ultimate and PPG paint the team couldn’t have executed this project in such a short period and to such a high level, delivering a product ready to take on the competition.
Of course Castrol were a massive part of this journey and involved in the critical engine lubrication and fluid process from the beginning. Ensuring consistency in these products was crucial during the engine design and testing phase where you need absolute consistency in all variables to evaluate new parts for performance.
Similarly when constantly pushing the limit, running at high RPM for hours to test reliability, the team needed an oil that was up for the challenge and Castrol delivered every time.
Now in its third year, the partnership between Castrol and Kelly Racing is stronger and more exciting than ever. The team’s striking new livery, produced with the team’s paint and graphic partners PPG and Graphic Art Mart, represents the new era with futuristic three-dimensional shapes and affects.
Kelly Racing also continues its partnership with LG, represented on the bonnet and roof of Rick’s Mustang. LG understands the highly technical and fast-paced aspects of Supercars, particularly when it comes to digital technology, providing valuable support to the team.
The team also confirms that it has partnered with GB Galvanising for the 2020 season with their branding on the front wheel arches and rear wings of car #15 and #7. Like Kelly Racing GB Galvanising operates at an extremely high level in the steel fabrication and galvanising business where quality and reliability are paramount.
The new Castrol Racing Mustang will this week undergo a complete shakedown ahead of its public racetrack debut at the Supercars pre-season test day at The Bend Motorsport Park on 18 February.
