The main type of Gas Compressors within the Offshore industry are dynamic compressors and reciprocating compressors.
Selection of cylinder lubricant for a reciprocating gas compressor depends on discharge pressure, corresponding temperature and gas composition. The Castrol range of gas compressor cylinder lubricants are formulated expressly for the compression of hydrocarbon gases. Cresta PG range of polyalkylene glycol based cylinder lubricants has been designed for more complex gas compositions to withstand hydrocarbon dilution. Cresta VA range is suited to more benign gas compositions at lower discharge temperatures.
CRESTA PG RANGE
Castrol’s Cresta PG range of polyalkylene glycol based compressor lubricants is formulated specifically for the compression of hydrocarbon gases. The ability of these lubricants to withstand dilution by dissolved hydrocarbons allows these lubricants to give excellent protection in the cylinders of reciprocating compressors.
PERFECTO SN RANGE
Castrol Perfecto SN 46 is a synthetic hydrocarbon based lubricant which has been developed for the lubrication of industrial gas turbines, gas compressors and other items of rotating equipment operating in the extremes of temperature or where the critical nature of the plant demands a premium lubricant to ensure long life and reliable operation with extended periods between shut-downs.
CRESTA VA RANGE
Castrol Cresta VA is a high viscosity mineral oil which is compounded in order to give a highly tenacious low friction lubricant film which is particularly tolerant of water. Water is thoroughly emulsified by the additives in Cresta VA to resist wash-off from metal surfaces, helping to prevent corrosion and wear when moisture is present. Castrol Cresta VA was initially formulated as a cylinder lubricant for steam engines but has since found to be effective in preventing cylinder liner in reciprocating gas compressors when compressing wet gas. The combination of high viscosity and low friction characteristics also makes Cresta VA an ideal lubricant for use in worm reduction gearboxes.
HYSPIN VG RANGE
Castrol’s Hyspin VG range of hydraulic oils is based on highly refined mineral oil enhanced with rust and oxidation inhibitors, also referred to as R&O hydraulic oils. It can be used in reciprocating compressor crankcase and for cylinder lubrication for very pure methane and low discharge pressures. Hyspin VG range is primarily designed for use in hydraulic systems where rust and oxidation resistance is desirable. This range is also suitable for pumps with silver-plated components.
Castrol Duratec L is a mineral based SAE 40 low ash gas engine lubricant. It can be used at reciprocating compressor crankcases and for cylinder lubrication with pure methane and low discharge temperatures. Duratec L is formulated primarily for spark ignition natural gas engines where a low ash formulation is specified and where the gas is largely free from aggressive components i.e. halogens and hydrogen sulphide. The detergent/dispersant additive system has been designed to control deposit formation and improve oxidation characteristics whilst offering excellent corrosion control and TBN retention. The Castrol Perfecto XEP turbine lubricants are based upon premium quality mineral oils enhanced with rust and oxidation inhibitors to give maximum protection at high temperatures. They also contain anti-wear additives to give additional load carrying properties. Perfecto XEP range is recommended for industrial gas turbines where the lubricant is likely to be exposed to very highly localized temperatures.
Castrol Perfecto T turbine oils are based on highly refined mineral oils, with selective additives to improve their inherent high oxidation stability and to protect against corrosion of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Castrol Perfecto T oils are primarily intended for the lubrication of steam and gas turbines but are also suitable for the lubrication of water turbines and power turbines of generating sets based on aero-derived gas turbines.
