Piston manufacturing is a precision engineering process where end product quality and finish is critical. At Castrol, we have focused on specific piston manufacturing operations to create a lubricant solution designed to deliver quality improvements, tooling improvements with associated cost reductions and fluid waste reduction.

Tool life tripled

In a piston manufacturing plant, we introduced our best in class synthetic neat cutting product, Castrol CareCut ES3. Set up time reduced by a factor of 4 and tool life multiplied by a factor of three. Scrap and re-work reduced by a factor of 16 and the need for constant system servicing was removed.

  • Improve the two critical applications in the process of manufacturing piston heads
    1. Alfin-ring turning where “mixed metals” (ferrous and aluminium) present a lubrication challenge to ensure optimum surface finish is achieved to avoid scrapping of components and tooling changes leading to manufacturing costs.
    2. Boring/reaming the gudgeon pin hole where surface finish is vital and imperfections often result in tooling breakages and scrap of components at a very expensive stage of manufacturing
  • Reduce the volumes of coolant used in the total manufacturing process. Waste reduction and swarf quality enhancement have direct benefits and we will use our expertise to deliver real improvements
  • Apply our expertise and experience to recommend and provide a product and associated services that drive value into your business
  • Focus our expertise particularly in product selection and services to support the product. By ensuring that the correct product
  • Reduce waste stream costs by extending bath life; establishing and monitoring critical fluid control parameters and / or product substitution; recycling fluids through dedicated on-site reconditioning equipment; recycling process water through dedicated treatment or filtration equipment
  • We will help you meet final wash criteria by providing products and associated services that ensure the final wash technical specification is achieved
  • Ensure global best practice transfer consistency in products, process improvements and cost reductions across all locations
