You could be forgiven for thinking that visiting the podium 11 times in a 12 round season and racking up four wins and five second places would be enough to wrap up a championship.

WRC 2009: Championship of extremes

The 2009 World Rally Championship is going down to the wire. With just two rounds remaining in Spain (October 2-4) and Rally GB (October 23-25), Castrol-backed Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen holds a slim five point lead over Citroen rival Sebastien Loeb, making this one of the closest fought championships in years. So what makes the WRC such a championship of extremes?

Mikko Hirvonen – meeting '09's new challenges

With the new season in full swing, it’s back to business for the Castrol-backed Ford World Rally Team. Despite the winter break though, there was little respite for the team, as a raft of WRC rule changes meant extra work for everyone from the travel bookers to the engineers. We caught up with Ford's lead driver Mikko Hirvonen to find out how the team and the car has evolved for the 2009 season.

Castrol's Rallying History

Our history in the WRC - from "the smell of Castrol R" to a flying through the trees at 170kph without landing for 60 metres. Think of World Championship rallying and your mind will probably conjure up an image of some of the great marques, such as Ford and BMC, Audi or Toyota. But Castrol has almost as rich a tradition in the category as any of the cars.
