Castrol Edge Car Engine Oil FAQ's
Q. I have a bottle of Castrol oil in the boot of my car, supplied by my dealer; but it’s not Castrol EDGE why?
A. Castrol EDGE was specifically designed with the needs of retail customers in mind and offers a wider choice of products. The comprehensive range of 7 products offers a complete solution whatever the customers driving style or location.
Dealers will continue to carry the grades appropriate to specific vehicle manufacturers. Franchised Workshops have a range of professional workshop products appropriate for specific manufacturers – the EDGE range of products are the retail alternatives.
Q. Which is the replacement for the SLX Longlife II oil?
A. This is the EDGE 5W-30 – the Longlife II oil was a 0W-30 viscosity to 503 00 / 506 00 / 506 01 specification – you’ll notice that as well as the new viscosity the specification on the EDGE 5W-30 is VW 504 00 / 507 00 – this is the latest VW specification for the VW Longlife oil.The EDGE 5W-30 is suitable for all Audi vehicles on both variable and fixed servicing and VW cars on variable servicing with the exception of - VW R5 and V10 TDi engines (Touareg) and VW Commercial vehicles without fitted DPF (diesel particulate filters) – these must use the 506 01 specification oil (SLX Longlife II) – contact your VW/Audi dealer for this product.
VW cars fitted with PD diesel engines on fixed servicing (VW 505 01) must use the EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 except models fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters which must use an oil meeting VW 507 00 – EDGE 5W-30
Q. Can I mix EDGE with my previous oils?
A. Yes, you can use the latest EDGE products to top up the previously available products that the EDGE has replaced.Q. I notice EDGE 5W-30 – can I use this for Ford engines?
A. No – Most Ford engines specify a 5W-30 Fuel efficient oil meeting WSS-M2C-913B/C and we recommend the use of Magnatec 5W-30 only. The exceptions are the Galaxy with the VW PD engine, and the latest Ford KA which should have Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 (VW 505.01 / FRD 917A specification.) and the latest Focus RS (refer to dealer)Q. My BMW needs Longlife 04 specification and I see this on EDGE Turbo Diesel 0W-30 – The name says “Turbo Diesel” - can this be used in petrol engines
A. If you have a requirement for BMW Longlife 04 specification in a petrol engined car, you can happily use any of the EDGE products that meet BMW LL04 - ie EDGE Turbo Diesel 0W-30, EDGE 5W-30, EDGE Sport 0W-40 or EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40.With regard to the EDGE Turbo Diesel 0W-30, you can use this in a petrol engine – as this meets the Longlife 04 specification which covers petrol and diesel engines.
Q. How do you tell if a VW is fixed or variable servicing?
A. On the vehicle data carrier plate of the car will be the letters “QG1” or “QG0/2” – the QG1 refers to the engines on variable or “Longlife” servicing and these cars will use the EDGE 5W-30 The letters QG0/2 indicate fixed servicing and these cars will use the EDGE 0W-30.PD (Pumpe Duese) diesel engines without Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) on fixed servicing will use the EDGE 5W-40 (505.01 specification)
Most recent VW and Audi cars (from 2000 onwards) are on the variable servicing schedule and will require EDGE 5W-30
