WHO MAY ENTER: Contest is open to legal U.S. residents who are between the ages of 16 and 25 as of October 1, 2007 who are or planning to pursue an education in preparation for a career in the automotive industry. Employees, officers, and directors of BP Lubricants USA Inc., their affiliated companies, subsidiaries, distributors, dealers, printers and/or advertising and promotional agencies, and any and all other companies associated with this contest, including immediate family members of each such person (spouses, parents, grandparents, children and siblings) and members of the same household are not eligible to participate. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: This contest requires the submission of an essay to participate. The essay must respond to the topic Why You Should Win The 2008 Eric Medlen Outperformers Scholarship. You must submit your essay on-line at the contest site by visiting www.syntecoutperformers.com and clicking on the contest link from 12:00:00 AM ET on October 1, 2007 and ending at 11:59:59 PM ET on May 31, 2008.

ESSAY FORMAT AND RULES: Tell us in 500 words or less "Why You Should Win The 2008 Eric Medlen Outperformers Scholarship" Essays must be in English, must be the original work of the entrant, must not violate any copyright or other rights, and must not have been previously published in any form. All entries become the property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.
JUDGING: All entries will be judged equally on the following criteria. Your essay should cover as many of the criteria listed below as possible.

Passion (65%)

  • Unusual or unique automotive–related activities
  • Participation in automotive–related groups, clubs or organizations
  • Automotive–related honors.
  • Creative Projects or ideas that demonstrate love of performance

Uniqueness of Individuals Talent ( 35%)

  • Breadth of automotive skill set
  • Unique projects performed
  • Persistence in overcoming obstacles
  • Ability to diagnose/fix problems
  • Character and attitude towards accomplishing goals.

The essays will be judged by a panel of brand and technical professionals who will determine the winners. Decisions by these judges are final. Contest winners will be announced on or about July 1, 2008. Winners will be notified by mail. Prizes are non-transferable and no cash redemption or substitution is permitted, except at Sponsor's sole discretion. Acceptance of prize constitutes consent by winners to the use of their names, likenesses and winning entries without further compensation, except where prohibited.
PRIZES: GRAND (1) $10,000 Scholarship to attend an automotive education program, technical institute or school approved by BP Lubricants USA Inc, a five day, four night trip for winner and a guest to a 2007 NHRA race of your choice between July and November of 2008. A dinner and VIP pit tour with Drivers and Crew of John Force Racing Inc., a MAC TOOLS 11 Draw Tool Chest valued at $3,500, a one year supply of Castrol SYNTEC motor oil (4 cases) and a one year subscription to a Primedia publication . The trip includes round trip coach airfare for two from major airport closest to winner's home, double occupancy hotel accommodations, two tickets to the NHRA Race, and $200 for incidental expenses. ARV. $19,500. First Prize: (1) $5,000 Scholarship to attend an automotive education program, technical institute or school approved by BP Lubricants USA Inc, a MAC TOOLS 5 Drawer Top Box and Tools valued at $2,000, a one year supply of Castrol SYNTEC motor oil (4 cases) and a one year subscription to a Primedia publication ARV. $7,300. Second Prize: (1) $2,500 Scholarship to attend an automotive education program, technical institute or school approved by BP Lubricants USA Inc, a MAC TOOLS 5 Drawer Top Box valued at $700, a one year supply of Castrol SYNTEC motor oil (4) cases and a one year subscription to a Primedia publication. ARV. $3,395. Honorable Mention: (7) Seven winners will receive a one year supply of Castrol SYNTEC motor oil (4 cases) and a one year subscription to a Primedia publication. ARV. $195. Total value of all prizes is approx. $31,560.
Prize Acceptance: Sponsor will pay the Scholarships on behalf of the prize winners to an accredited school for study in a technical/ automotive program. Sponsor reserves the right to approve the program selected by the Grand Prize, First Prize and Second Prize winners before payment is made on winner's behalf. Grand Prize Winner and guest, First Prize and Second Prize Winner will be required to sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility/Release of Liability and Publicity (where permitted) within fourteen (14) days of notification. If Grand Prize, First Prize or Second Prize Winner is not of the age of majority from his/her legal state of residence, a parent or legal guardian will be required to sign all paperwork and attend the event with the Grand Prize winner. If Grand Prize winner is of the age of majority in his/her legal residence, the guest of the Grand Prize winner must also be of the age of majority in his/her respective residence. If a potential winner cannot be contacted within (14) fourten days after the first attempt to contact the potential winner, if the potential winner does not sign and return the Affidavit of Eligibility/Release of Liability and Publicity (where permitted) in the required time period, or if a prize is returned as undeliverable, the prize will be deemed forfeited and an alternate winner will be selected from among all remaining eligible entries received.
By accepting prizes, winners consent to use of name, state of residence and likeness for advertising and promotional purposes on-line and in print, or in any other media worldwide in connection with the Contest, without limitation and without additional compensation worldwide, except where prohibited by law. By accepting prizes, winners further agree to release Sponsor and its subsidiaries, affiliates and related companies and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, including but not limited to The Contest Factory (the "Contest Parties"), from any and all liability, loss or damage of any kind arising out of or in connection with winners' participation in this Contest, or with respect to the awarding, receipt, possession, use and/or misuse of any prize, or the participation in prize-related activities. By accepting prizes, winners further acknowledge that the Contest Parties have neither made, nor are in any manner responsible or liable for, any warranty, representation or guarantee, express or implied in fact or in law, relative to prize or to any portion thereof, including but not limited to its quality, merchantability, mechanical condition, or fitness for a particular purpose. All taxes, including federal, state and local taxes, are the sole responsibility of winners who may be issued an IRS 1099 tax form (winners are advised to seek independent counsel regarding prize winnings).
Limitations of Liability: Sponsor and its agents are not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by entrants, printing errors, or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest. Lost, late, damaged, misdirected, illegible, incomplete, postage-due or mutilated entries by mail, any computer, on-line, telephone or technical malfunctions, delays or human errors that occur in the processing, transmission or receipt of entries, or for inaccurate transcription of entry information, or for entries that are stolen, misdirected, garbled, lost or delayed by computer transmissions or any injury or damage to persons or property, including but not limited to entrants' computers, hardware and/or software, which may be caused directly, or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrants' participation in the Contest or receipt, redemption or use of any prize. If, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of being conducted as planned, including but not limited to infection by computer viruses, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or other causes beyond the control of Sponsor, Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest . Sponsor also reserves the right, in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual found to be violating these Official Rules or suspected of attempting to disrupt or defraud the entry process or the operation of the Contest , and Sponsor may prosecute or seek other legal redress against anyone suspected of engaging in these acts.
By Entering and accepting the Grand Prize, winner, winner's parent or legal guardian and winner's guest accept the dangerous nature and risk in an automotive repair facility and racetrack, including personal injury and/or death. Winner and all guests acknowledge that participation in the Grand Prize event is voluntary and acknowledges that there are natural factors and occurrences which may impact or affect the safety of the activities that he/she is participating in, and he/she assumes the risk of such factors and occurrences and agrees that all promotional parties shall not be in any way responsible for any resulting injury/death. The Contest Parties are not responsible for weather related or any other cancellations to the event which are not under their control.
