Our new Castrol EDGE Sport 0W-40 has been extremely tested to prove beyond doubt the extent of its superior performance.
We took two identical cars, both with 4.6L V8 engines, and filled one engine with Castrol EDGE Sport 0W-40 and the other with a competitor synthetic oil. Using a special test chassis dynamometer the cars were run flat out at maximum power (225bhp) without topping up the oil.
Our engine was still running strong 40 hours after the competition engine had seized.

The Tests: Extreme Heat
The ‘Ring of Fire’ test *
Our challenge was to test how much heat Castrol EDGE technology could take. So we started by putting our Castrol EDGE oil into an ordinary engine. Then things quickly became very out of the ordinary – for hours we surrounded the engine with flames until the plastic parts melts and burned, then the hoses melted, and eventually even metal parts melted and ran down the side of the engine. So what about the oil? During the test it reached a startling 340 degree C, far hotter than any oil reaches in service, far hotter than a domestic oven. So what next?
We took the actual oil that had been tortured, filtered out the bits of burnt things and put it in a can. We sent it to a leading independent oil test laboratory, and asked them to run the toughest European industry high temperature test. 72 continuous hours of 5600 rpm and 150 degree C oil temperature, running so hard the exhaust glows bright red. The result? Despite all the torture, it was a clear pass on every requirement. Deposits, viscosity control, piston ring sticking, all beat the highest standards.

At -52 degree C the competitor’s oil is slow and stiff whilst our oil keeps on flowing. Just another 3 degree lower and Castrol EDGE Sport 0W-40 still flows while the competitor’s has almost solidified.
