Castrol in the WRC

Mikko Hirvonen in action

When it comes to the elements which make up the championship-winning Ford World Rally Team, Castrol is a vital part of the team.

With its respected history and motorsport heritage, the match with Ford is perfect. Before winning the 2006 Manufacturers’ World Rally Championship, the Blue Oval hadn’t taken a world title in rallying since 1979, so it is fitting that Castrol should have played a part both times.

“We’re particularly lucky to be working with Castrol,” says Ford World Rally Team technical director Christian Loriaux. “They are truly the best lubricants partner to have.”

Running at the limit

Castrol is used throughout the Focus RS WRC car, making it a key component. For the engine, lubricants are developed with such precision that they enable constant running at the limit and Castrol is so in tune with the 2.0-litre Ford Duratec motor that it wouldn’t run to the same level with any other product.

The key is to reduce friction as much as possible and not just in the engine. Less resistance, whether it be in the gearbox, at the axles or in the suspension, means greater efficiency and therefore less heat. Not only does this improve performance, but it can also increase reliability.

With racing machinery, the car or bike is only as good as its weakest link. It’s a cumulative effect and with the lubricants taken care of, it’s one less area for the team to worry about.

Off the shelf and bespoke

Our extensive range of standard products suits most of the Ford team’s requirements, but the technical ability to develop new products for precise and specific applications is always there.

“Castrol can analyse the oil each time it has been used in the engine and the gearbox,” says Loriaux. “It can tell us what metallic particles are in the oil, so that gives us a very good idea of whether the engine is wearing normally or excessively. That’s very useful for predicting the life of the engine or helping to plan which direction you go in for development.”

Castrol – it’s more than just oil, it’s liquid engineering.
