Ashley in line to advance
Castrol-backed Team Force driver, Ashley Force, is hopeful of cementing a top-eight place in the Funny Car championship at this weekend's Summit Nationals.Ashley currently lies in seventh place and has a wealth of experience at the Norwalk strip in Ohio.
"There are a lot of good drivers right behind me including dad [John Force] so we don't have a lock [on a top eight position]," explained Ashley. "There's still a lot of work to do, but I'm on a great team. Our strategy has been to take what the race track gives us."
John Force: "We still have to go and win races."
For the 2007 season the NHRA championship has been split into three segments. After the first 17 events the top eight drivers will advance and have their points re-adjusted so that each competitor is separated by ten points. After four more races the points will again be adjusted in advance of a two-race title shootout. It is a format that Ashley's father and team owner John Force is not a fan of, but which still gives him a chance of overall victory despite a disappointing start to the season.
"The new format has kind of played into our hands," he said. "But we still have to perform. We still have to go rounds and win races. If we can do that, we can get right back in it."
