Kapil Dev To Receive Castrol Lifetime Achievement Award

Release date: 25 November 2004
Kapil Dev Nikhanj, India’s most successful all-rounder and World Cup-winning captain, will receive the CASTROL Lifetime Achievement in Cricket Award at the seventh annual CASTROL Awards for Cricketing Excellence Ceremony, to be held in Kolkata on Friday, 26th November 2004.
Kapil Dev took 434 wickets, still the highest by an Indian in Test cricket, and scored 5248 runs in a career that spanned 131 Tests and 16 years. He took 253 wickets and scored 3,783 runs from 225 one-day internationals.
Kapil’s greatest contribution to Indian cricket was the World Cup triumph in 1983. His brisk bowling, belligerent batting and bold captaincy resulted in India stunning the mighty West Indies in the summit clash on 25th June 1983. As new-ball bowler, Kapil was primarily responsible for inspiring an entire generation of Indians to take to fast bowling. From Chetan Sharma and Javagal Srinath in the 80s and 90s to the Zaheer Khans, Ashish Nehras and Irfan Pathans of today, they all followed the footsteps of the man who showed the world that young men from India could also intimidate opposition batsmen with pace.
Kapil was also instrumental in injecting a never-say-die attitude into the psyche of Indian cricket during his extraordinary career. The most remarkable instance of his refusal to give up until the last ball was bowled, was seen during the 1983 World Cup, when he rescued his team from a perilous 17-5 against Zimbabwe by playing a breathtaking and eventually match-winning knock of 175.
The CASTROL Lifetime Achievement in Cricket Award comprises a trophy and a cheque for Rs. 5 lacs. Previous winners of this award are:

Capt. Vijay Hazare (1999-00)
Polly Umrigar (2000-01)
B.S. Chandrasekhar (2001-02)
Sunil Gavaskar (2002-03)
